Short answer: seven councils run the tips around Leeds, and their rules now differ more than they agree. Six of the seven want a permit or registration even if you arrive in a car. Leeds and Bradford tips are not taking fridges or freezers at the moment. Barnsley’s Smithies tip has been shut since 6 August. Council bulky collections run from £25 to £37 for the first few items. Every figure below was read on the council’s own website on 02/10/2026, with the source linked under each section.

What changed in 2026

  • Fridges and freezers: Leeds and Bradford both say they are “temporarily unable to accept fridges and freezers” at their tips because of a national shortage of processing capacity. Wakefield’s contractor has stopped taking fridges from paying weighbridge customers.
  • Car permits are now the norm. North Yorkshire started registration on 27 April 2026. Leeds is now the only council of the seven where a car needs no permit.
  • Barnsley: Smithies has been closed since 6 August 2026 with no reopening date. Worsbrough is open 8am to 5pm in the meantime.
  • Asbestos: Leeds charges householders from £72.31 at Kirkstall transfer station. Calderdale, Wakefield, Barnsley and North Yorkshire take small amounts of household asbestos cement with no charge published, and Kirklees and Bradford take it by booking.

When the tip is not the answer

If you have no permit, no suitable vehicle, a fridge the tip will not take, or more than the allowance, a licensed waste carrier can take it instead. Always check the carrier on the Environment Agency register before you pay, because if your waste is fly-tipped you can still be fined. Kruze is a licensed waste carrier (CBDU597687), accredited under the Leeds Accredited Waste Carrier Scheme, and collects across Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield, Wakefield, Barnsley and Harrogate from £24.99, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call or WhatsApp 07436 120271, or see rubbish removal in Leeds.

Councils change these rules often. This guide was checked against each council’s own website on 02/10/2026. If you spot a change, email hello@kruze.co.uk and we will update it.
