There are two ways to get rid of bulky waste in Bradford. You can book Bradford Council’s bulk collection, which is cheap for a couple of items if you can wait for a slot and carry them outside yourself, or you can use a licensed man and van, which comes same or next day, loads everything for you and takes items the council refuses. What counts as bulky waste?
Bulky waste is anything too big for your household bin. The usual items people need gone are the same ones every time.
- Sofas, armchairs and other upholstered seating
- Mattresses, divans and bed frames
- Fridges, freezers, washing machines and cookers
- Wardrobes, chests of drawers, tables and shelving
- Garden furniture, BBQs and general clear out clutter
Some of these have their own disposal route, which is why they cannot just go in a bin or a skip. More on that below.
Option 1: Bradford Council bulk collection
Bradford Council runs a paid bulky collection that you book online. You register an account first, then pay a set fee for a small number of items per booking, and wait for a collection slot. Slots are weekday only, so there is no weekend option, and at busy times you can wait a while for a date.
Two things to know before you pay. Check the council’s excluded items list first, because there are no refunds if your item turns out to be one they will not take. And you have to leave the items outside in an agreed spot on the day, because the crew will not come into your home or garden to fetch them. This route suits you if you have one or two standard items, you can move them to the kerb yourself, and you are not in a hurry.
Option 2: a licensed man and van
A man and van is the faster, hands off option. We come to you across Bradford, usually the same day or the next, load everything ourselves including from upstairs or the back garden, and take it away there and then. There is no registering, no waiting for a council slot, and no limit of two or three items.
You also get a waste transfer note on every collection, which is the paperwork proving your waste was handled legally by a registered carrier. That matters more than people realise, and we come back to it at the end.
Which is cheaper, the council or a man and van?
Honest answer, because cheap only counts if it fits the job. For a single sofa you can carry out yourself and you are happy to wait a week or two, the council collection is usually the lower price. Sofas, mattresses and fridges need special handling
These three are priced per item because each has its own legal disposal route. Sofas and armchairs contain POPS, which are chemicals from old flame retardants, so upholstered seating has to be kept separate and incinerated rather than recycled or landfilled. Mattresses are not a POPS item, whatever anyone tells you, but they still go to a specialist recycler because the springs will not compact. Fridges have to be degassed by a licensed facility before anything else happens to them. Why using a licensed carrier matters
Your duty of care does not end when someone drives off with your waste. If you hand a bulky load to an unlicensed man with a van and they fly-tip it, the investigation follows the waste back to you.
