Yes, and free at any Barnsley tip. The thing to watch is the council collection: Barnsley counts a bed frame, a mattress and a detachable headboard as three separate items, so a bed is £36.75, not the £28 headline. Mattresses cannot go in a skip and will not fit a wheelie bin. Kruze collects them from the room they are in, across Barnsley and South Yorkshire, from £45, under Waste Carrier Licence CBDU597687. Read the bracket

Booking a bulky collection in Barnsley for “a bed” costs more than the price you first see, and the reason is one bracket in the council’s own item list.

A mattress will not go in a wheelie bin, is banned from skips, and charities require the fire safety label. So it is the tip, a council collection, or a licensed carrier, and in Barnsley the council route is priced in a way that rewards reading the small print.

What Barnsley Council allows at the tip

Mattresses are on Barnsley’s published accepted list with no single-site restriction, which is not something Barnsley grants often. Plasterboard is Worsbrough only and has to be clean of anything bonded to it. Mattresses are simply accepted, wherever you go.

Upholstered seating is listed separately from mattresses on that same page, which is Barnsley quietly getting the POPs distinction right: sofas and chairs are handled under the POPs rules, mattresses are not.

What a Barnsley Council collection costs

Barnsley charges £28 for up to two items on its standard list, then £8.75 for each additional item, to a maximum of twelve. A mattress is a standard item. So is a bed frame or base, but Barnsley’s own wording on that entry is the thing to read twice.

A bed is not one item in Barnsley

Barnsley’s standard list says “Bed frame or base (not including mattress and/or detachable headboard)”. Read that carefully. The frame is one item. The mattress is a second. A detachable headboard is a third. So booking a collection for “a bed” is really booking three items: £28 for the first two and £8.75 for the third, £36.75 in total, not £28.

Barnsley also counts five black sacks of general household waste as one item, to a maximum of ten sacks. Useful if you are clearing the room the bed came out of.

The trade waste line

Household waste recycling centres are for household waste from residents. If you are a landlord clearing a void, an agent clearing between tenancies, or a business getting rid of beds from a let, that is trade waste and the household route is closed to you. Turning up with it can mean a refusal at the gate at best and enforcement at worst.

That is not us talking you out of the tip. It is the line the councils draw, and it is the single most common reason a Barnsley mattress job ends up with us.

Barnsley Council tipFreeFit it in a car, drive it, lift it into the skip yourself
Barnsley Council collection£28, because that is exactly the two item bandGet it outside before the crew arrives, wait for the date
Kruze£105 for the pairNothing. We come to the room it is in

£28 for the pair is fair and Barnsley’s twelve item ceiling is the most generous in the area, so a whole bedroom can go in one booking. Add a headboard and you are at £36.75. Add the stairs and it is a different conversation, because the council collects from outside.

What it costs with Kruze

Mattress prices are fixed and itemised, so you know before we set off.

ItemPrice
Single mattress£45
Double mattress£60
King size mattress£70
Divan base£45

The price includes the labour and the disposal. There is no call out charge and nothing is added afterwards. We are a licensed waste carrier, registration CBDU597687, and every job produces a waste transfer note, which is what covers your duty of care under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

What we do that the council route does not: we carry it out. Council crews collect from outside your property, so a mattress on the first floor is your problem until it reaches the kerb. Ours is a two person lift from the room it is in, stairs included.

Why mattresses are priced separately from ordinary rubbish

Two reasons, and neither of them is POPs.

They are refused by skips. A mattress will not compact. The springs hold their shape and the foam springs back, so it takes up the same space at the tip that it did in your bedroom. That is why every skip hire company in the country prohibits them and why they are charged per item rather than by weight.

They are not upholstered seating. Sofas, armchairs and upholstered dining chairs are POPs waste and must go to an authorised facility. Government guidance is explicit that mattresses, curtains, blinds and beds are not domestic seating and are not covered by that guidance. Anyone telling you your mattress costs more because of POPs has it wrong.

Frequently asked questions

How many items is a bed in a Barnsley bulky collection?

Up to three. Barnsley’s standard list reads “Bed frame or base (not including mattress and/or detachable headboard)”, so the frame, the mattress and a detachable headboard are counted separately. Three items is £36.75, not £28.

Which Barnsley tips take mattresses?

All of them. Mattresses are on the accepted list with no site restriction, unlike plasterboard which is Worsbrough only.

Can I include bin bags in a Barnsley bulky collection?

Yes. Five black sacks of general household waste count as one item, to a maximum of ten sacks, and they must not contain food waste.

Can I put a mattress in a skip?

No. Mattresses are prohibited in skips because the springs will not compact and the foam springs back. That is a skip rule rather than a Kruze one.

Mattress rules in the other areas we cover

Every council here takes a mattress at the tip for free. What they differ on is the price of collecting one from your door, and what happens to it afterwards.
