Can I Take a Van to the Tip in Bradford?
You need a permit just to enter any Bradford tip, and a separate van permit on top for a van, a pickup or a trailer over 1.5m. Even then, large vehicles are only accepted at two sites, Bowling Back Lane and Keighley, and only with a Large Capacity Vehicle Permit. ANPR cameras read every plate on the way in. Business, trade and commercial waste is not accepted at any City of Bradford MDC tip whatever permit you hold, so if the load came out of a job rather than a house, the tip is not the route at all. Where the permit will not stretch, a licensed carrier such as Kruze collects from £24.99 across Bradford and West Yorkshire under Waste Carrier Licence CBDU597687. Call or WhatsApp 07436 120271.

The catch: cameras, and only two sites take a van at all
Bradford is the only council in our area that reads your number plate. ANPR and CCTV run at every site specifically to catch people using a household tip for trade waste or exceeding their permit. If you turn up in a van with a business name on the side, expect the conversation.
The two-site rule matters more than the permit. Most of Bradford’s tips will not take a van at all, whatever paperwork you hold, so a permit gets you into Bowling Back Lane or Keighley and nowhere else. If neither is near you, the permit has bought you a longer drive.
What actually counts as a van
This is where most refusals start, because the definition is not the everyday one.
Councils in our area draw the line by some combination of gross vehicle weight, height, wheelbase and whether the back seats are still in it. A 4×4 with the rear seats taken out is a commercial vehicle to most of them. A camper is judged on height. A car with a trailer is judged on the trailer, not the car.
The practical test: if it is taller than a normal car, longer than a normal car, or has no back seats, assume you need the permit and check before you load.
What happens if you turn up without one
Nothing dramatic, and that is the problem. You get turned around at the gate with the waste still in the vehicle, having spent the trip and the fuel. Sites do not make exceptions on the day, and where a height barrier is involved the decision is made by the barrier rather than by a person you can reason with.
The second-order cost is worse. If the clearance was tied to a tenancy end, a completion date or a skip being collected, a wasted trip is not just a wasted morning.
The trade waste line, which is not negotiable
Every council in this list refuses business, trade and commercial waste at household tips. Not “discourages”, refuses. This catches:
- A landlord clearing a property between tenants
- A sole trader clearing out a workshop or a unit
- Anyone whose waste came from paid work, including your own
- Builders waste from a job, even if you did the job on your own house in some cases
If the waste is trade waste, a household permit does not make it acceptable, and in Bradford that route is closed regardless of what you are driving. That is not a Kruze sales line, it is the duty of care in section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and the liability for getting it wrong sits with whoever produced the waste.
When a collection is simply the better answer
Not always. If you have a car, a boot’s worth of household items and a free morning, the tip is free and you should use it. We will not pretend otherwise.
It stops being the better answer when:
- The permit does not cover your vehicle, or you do not hold the V5, or you have used your visits
- The waste is trade waste, where no permit helps
- You would need several trips, and the fuel and the hours start to add up
- The items are heavy or awkward, and there is nobody to help you lift them into the vehicle and out again
- There is a deadline, and the permit takes days you do not have

Frequently asked questions
Which Bradford tips take a van?
Bowling Back Lane and Keighley, and only with a Large Capacity Vehicle Permit. The other sites do not accept large vehicles at all, whatever permit you hold.
What are the ANPR cameras for?
They read number plates at every site to enforce the permit policy and catch trade waste being brought in as household waste. A van with a business name on it will attract attention.
Do you need a permit to collect from me?
No. We are a licensed waste carrier, CBDU597687, upper tier, and we tip at licensed commercial facilities rather than household recycling centres. The permit schemes on this page apply to residents taking their own waste, not to us.
Can you take trade waste?
Yes. That is the main practical difference. Commercial and trade waste is normal work for us and comes with a waste transfer note, which is the document that proves it was handled legally.
How quickly can you come?
Usually the same day if you call before noon and a van is free, next day otherwise, seven days a week.

Carrying asbestos? The rules are stricter again
A van permit gets you through the gate. Asbestos has its own separate rules on top, and in Bradford they decide whether the trip is possible at all. Read the Bradford asbestos rules.
Van and trailer rules in the other areas we cover
Every council sets these differently, so the guide is written separately for each one.

A permit gets the van through the gate, it does not change what the site accepts. Plasterboard at the Bradford tip has its own rules on top.
A mattress needs no permit in a car boot, but it will not fit most car boots. Mattresses at the Bradford tip covers the alternatives.
A permit gets the vehicle in. The DIY waste allowance limits what you can unload once it is. Soil and rubble at the Bradford tip covers that limit.
Different item, different limit. Tyres at the Bradford tip are capped by count rather than by vehicle.
