How does the Leeds council bulky waste collection work?
Leeds City Council calls its scheme the “unwanted items collection”, and it is one of the more generous in Yorkshire. Every household gets one free bulky waste collection per financial year, which runs April to March. Once you have used your free slot, you can book up to three more collections in the same year at £30 each. Households in receipt of council tax support can have all four collections free of charge.
You book online at leeds.gov.uk and you will need your council tax account number to hand. Each booking covers up to five items. You leave them outdoors and within your property boundary before 7am on the collection day, positioned so two people can move them safely, and the crew can arrive any time between 7am and 5pm. The service is for private residents only, so landlords clearing rental properties and businesses cannot use it.
What items will Leeds council take?
The Leeds City Council bulky waste collection accepts most common household items:
- Sofas, armchairs, mattresses and bed frames
- Fridges, freezers, cookers, washing machines and tumble dryers
- Wardrobes and other furniture, dismantled where possible
- Carpets and underlay, kept dry, rolled and separated from each other
- Internal and external doors, except UPVC, with any glass panels taped safe
- Up to four bags of garden waste in place of items, double bagged
They will not take garden sheds, fitted kitchen units including sinks and worktops, bathroom suites, boilers, storage heaters and radiators, building material including rubble, car parts, gas bottles, hazardous materials such as chemicals, paint and asbestos, glass items including mirrors, greenhouses, fish tanks, fluorescent lights, pianos and organs, hot tubs, windows and window frames, or general household waste that belongs in your black or green bin. Mirrors are worth a special mention, because anything with a mirror attached is refused too, including a mirrored wardrobe.
Note that each part of a dismantled item counts as one item. The council’s own example is a bed, which counts as four items: frame, slats, mattress and headboard. That eats most of your five slots in one go.
How long is the wait for a Leeds council bulky waste collection?
Leeds does not publish a target timescale, so the honest answer is that it depends on what is left in the diary. You book an appointment rather than join a queue, and the calendar only opens four weeks in advance. In busy periods, especially after Christmas, around bank holidays and during summer moving season, it can show nothing at all. The council’s own advice when that happens is to check the form each day, Monday to Saturday, until a slot appears, or take the items to a household waste recycling centre for free instead.
A date a fortnight out is fine for a spare mattress in the garage. It is less fine when you are completing a house sale on Friday, a tenant has left a sofa in the yard, or the landlord inspection is on Monday. That gap between council availability and real deadlines is exactly where private bulky waste collection in Leeds earns its keep.
What if I live in Bradford, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Halifax, Harrogate or Barnsley?

- Bradford collects three bulky items for £30. It will not take bathroom suites, fitted kitchens, mirrors, radiators, rubble, windows or doors, and collections now happen only at weekends.
- Wakefield charges £35 for up to three items per collection.
- Huddersfield and Dewsbury (Kirklees) price per item: £11.66 each for standard items such as carpet or furniture, up to six per order, and £31.80 each for sofas, settees, recliners, mattresses and armchairs, again up to six. White goods such as a fridge, freezer or cooker are £31.80 with a limit of one per order. Kirklees Passport holders get 50 percent off. Items go within your property boundary by 7am, not on the pavement.
- Halifax (Calderdale) charges £25 for up to five items, then £5 per extra item, with fridges and freezers charged at £25 each. Collections can take up to 28 working days.
- Harrogate (North Yorkshire Council) has a minimum charge of £37 for up to two items. You could get money off if you receive a means tested council tax reduction, though the council does not publish the discounted figure, so ask when you book. Collection is usually within three weeks of booking.
- Barnsley charges £28 for up to two items on its standard list, then £8.75 for each additional standard item up to a maximum of 12. Anything off the standard list, more than 12 items, or a landlord or business booking is quoted individually.

If your waste is found dumped, you can be fined even though someone else dumped it. Householders have a legal duty of care to check that anyone taking their waste is authorised. The fixed penalty for breaching that duty is £200 in Leeds, and councils in England may set it anywhere between £150 and £600. Fly tipping fixed penalties can reach £1,000, and anyone convicted of fly tipping in court can be fined an unlimited amount or imprisoned for up to 5 years. So before handing waste to anyone:
- Ask for their waste carrier licence number and check it on the Environment Agency public register.
- Be suspicious of cash-only quotes from social media that seem too cheap.
- Get a receipt or waste transfer note showing what was taken and by whom.
