How to Get Rid of a Treadmill or Gym Equipment in Leeds

The cheapest way to get rid of a treadmill, exercise bike or cross trainer in Leeds is to sell it or give it away, then the council’s free unwanted items collection, which takes electricals as long as they are outside your home before 7am. The problem is usually the weight and where the machine sits. Treadmills are heavy, awkward and often upstairs or in a garage, and the council crew will not collect from inside a house or a garage. Electric machines are electrical waste, so they should be recycled rather than binned, and a shop selling you a replacement has to offer you a way to hand back the old one. When it needs carrying out, Kruze collects gym equipment from £24.99 for a single item, and heavy weights and benches are priced by weight, from £68 for 100kg. We are a licensed waste carrier (CBDU597687) and you get a waste transfer note on every job.

Why is gym equipment so hard to get rid of?
Three reasons, and they stack up.
Weight. A motorised treadmill has a motor, a steel frame and a heavy deck. Even folded, it is a two person lift, and many will not go round a tight landing without coming apart. Dumbbells, plates and kettlebells are small but dense. A modest set of iron plates can weigh more than a sofa.
Where it lives. Home gyms end up in the spare bedroom, the loft conversion or the garage. That means stairs, door frames and a garage door that only opens halfway.
What it is made of. Treadmills, bikes with screens and powered cross trainers are electrical equipment. They belong with electrical recycling, not general waste. Benches, racks and free weights are mostly steel and go for scrap metal recycling.
Can I sell or donate my old treadmill or exercise bike?
Often, yes, and it is worth trying first. Working treadmills, spin bikes, rowing machines and adjustable dumbbells all sell second hand. January and early spring are the best times, when everyone is starting a new routine. Give the buyer the model number and measurements, and agree up front that they collect it.
If it will not sell, list it free on Freecycle or a local Facebook group. Some charity shops and community groups take working fitness kit, but most need it to be clean, complete and in working order, and many cannot collect anything heavy. Ring before you load the car.
Kirkstall recycling centre has the Revive Leeds re-use shop on site, which is another option for kit in good condition.
Will Leeds City Council collect a treadmill?
The council’s unwanted items collection accepts electricals, from TVs and cookers to washing machines, with loose wires taped or tied to the item. Every household gets one free collection a year, April to March, for up to five items, with extra collections at £30 each. There are firm rules, though:
- Items must be outside within your boundary before 7am, and the crew can come any time up to 5pm.
- Nothing is collected from inside a property, including garages and outhouses.
- Anything larger than 6 feet by 4 feet is refused.
- The service is for private residents only, not landlords or businesses.

So the council route works if you can get the treadmill out of the house yourself. For a machine in a back bedroom, that is the hard bit.
Can I take gym equipment to the tip in Leeds?
Yes, if you live in Leeds and can get it there in a car. Kirkstall recycling centre takes electrical appliances and scrap metal, so a treadmill goes in electricals and a weights bench in metal. Vans, pick-ups and trailers need a commercial permit first, and staff cannot lift for you. Source: Kirkstall household waste recycling centre, checked 27/10/2026.
What if I am buying a new machine?
Ask the retailer about take back. Under the WEEE Regulations, a business selling you a new electrical item must give you a way to get rid of the old household one it replaces. That can be free in-store take back, an alternative free take back service, or membership of the Distributor Take Back Scheme. Retailers must also tell you which service they offer. In practice, collection on delivery is the most useful version for a treadmill. Ask before you order, because it is far easier to arrange then. Our guide to disposing of electricals in Leeds covers the rest of the WEEE routes.
What does Kruze charge to remove gym equipment?
Machines are priced as items or by van space, and heavy steel is priced by weight.
| Equipment | How we price it | Kruze price |
|---|---|---|
| One exercise bike or rowing machine | Single item | from £24.99 |
| Treadmill or cross trainer | Single item or quarter load | from £24.99, quote by photo |
| Home gym clear out, several machines | Quarter or half van load | from £50 or from £100 |
| Weights, plates, dumbbells | By weight | 50kg £45, 100kg £68, 200kg £136 |
| Full garage gym and other clutter | Full van load | from £200 |
The price includes two people carrying it out from any room or floor, the disposal and the transfer note. If a treadmill has to come apart to get down the stairs, we bring the tools and do it. Tell us the floor, the stairs and whether it folds when you send the photo, and the figure you are given is the one you pay. Electric machines go to electrical recycling and steel goes for metal recycling. See our WEEE electrical waste recycling service.

How do I get a treadmill out of an upstairs room?
If you are doing it yourself, plan it before you lift.
- Unplug it and fold it if it folds. Lock the deck in the upright position.
- Check the manual for how the console and uprights come off. Most treadmills are far easier to move as a deck plus a frame.
- Measure the tightest point. That is usually the turn at the top of the stairs, not the front door.
- Use two people, minimum. One at the bottom takes the weight. Never let it slide down the stairs on its own.
- Protect the walls and banister with a blanket, and clear the hallway first.
If any of that sounds like a bad idea for your back, send us a photo instead. Garage gyms are usually part of a bigger job, and our garage clearance cost guide shows how those are priced.
FAQs
Can a treadmill go in a skip?
Electrical items should be kept apart from general waste and recycled as WEEE, so a treadmill is better off at the tip, on a council collection or on a licensed van than buried in a skip. Ask any skip firm before you put one in.
Will the council take my exercise bike from the garage?
No. Leeds City Council does not collect from inside a property, and its page names garages and outhouses. The bike has to be outside within your boundary before 7am.
How much does it cost to get rid of weights in Leeds?
The tip takes scrap metal free from Leeds residents arriving by car. With Kruze, free weights are priced by weight: 50kg is £45, 100kg is £68 and 200kg is £136.
Do you collect gym equipment from gyms and businesses?
Yes. Leeds tips and the council collection refuse business waste, so a licensed collection with a waste transfer note is the compliant route for a gym, a hotel or an office. Send a photo and the address.
