How to Get Rid of Garden Furniture and Old BBQs in Leeds

You can get rid of garden furniture and an old barbecue in Leeds for free if you can take it to a council recycling centre in a car, or book it into the council’s free unwanted items collection, which takes up to five items once a year. Wooden, metal and plastic furniture all have a route, and a decent set often sells or goes to reuse. Two things need care. Gas bottles are refused by Leeds recycling centres and by the bulky collection, so they go back to the supplier. Disposable barbecues have to be cold, soaked and wrapped before they go in the black bin, because hot ones have started fires in Leeds bin lorries. If you would rather it all went in one go, Kruze collects garden furniture and barbecues from £24.99 for a single item, with a quarter van load from £50. We are a licensed waste carrier (CBDU597687) and every job comes with a waste transfer note.

What are the free ways to get rid of garden furniture in Leeds?
The council’s unwanted items collection. Every Leeds household gets one free collection each financial year, April to March, for up to five items. Extra collections are £30 each, up to four a year, and households on council tax support get four free. Items must be outside within your property boundary before 7am, and the crew can come any time up to 5pm. A table and four chairs uses the whole allowance, because each chair counts as an item. The council does not collect from garages, outhouses or communal areas, and it refuses gas bottles, garden sheds and anything bigger than 6 feet by 4 feet. The recycling centre. Leeds tips are free for Leeds residents arriving by car. Kirkstall, for example, takes wood, scrap metal, furniture and electricals. Vans, pick-ups and trailers need a commercial permit first, and gas cylinders are not accepted at all. Kirkstall also has the Revive Leeds re-use shop on site, which is worth a look if your set is in good order. Winter opening at Kirkstall runs 8am to 4pm from 26 October. Selling or giving it away. Metal bistro sets, hardwood benches, rattan sofas and parasols with working winders sell quickly in spring. At the end of the season, list it free on Freecycle or a local Facebook group and let someone else do the lifting.
How should I dispose of a gas barbecue and its gas bottle?
Split the barbecue from the bottle. They go to different places.
The gas bottle is the hard part. Leeds recycling centres say gas cylinders should go back to the manufacturer or retailer, and the bulky collection refuses them. If yours is a Calor bottle, Calor asks you to return it to a Calor Centre or a Calor retailer and to ring before you travel. Any refund depends on your cylinder paperwork and where you return it. The barbecue itself is mostly metal. With the bottle disconnected and taken away, it can go in the scrap metal at the tip, in a council collection as one item, or on our van.
How do I get rid of a disposable or charcoal barbecue safely?
Leeds City Council’s advice is to let a disposable barbecue cool completely, at least until the next day, then soak it in water, wrap it in foil and put it in the black bin. In May 2025 the council reported three near-miss fires in bin wagons in one week, in Burmantofts, Armley and Middleton, and said the evidence pointed to disposable barbecues or batteries. Treat ash from a kettle barbecue the same way and let it go fully cold first. The metal bowl, legs and grill then go for scrap.
Which garden furniture can be recycled?
| Material | Free route | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden table, bench, chairs | Tip wood container, or sell | Rotten softwood is still fine for the wood skip |
| Metal bistro set, cast iron bench | Tip scrap metal | Heavy cast iron is priced by weight on our van |
| Plastic chairs and loungers | Tip, council collection | Check your site’s page for rigid plastics |
| Rattan sofa set with cushions | Sell, or council collection | Each piece counts towards the five |
| Parasol and base | Tip or council collection | Concrete or water filled bases are heavy |
| Gas barbecue | Tip scrap metal, bottle returned | Never leave the bottle attached |
| Gas bottle | Return to supplier | Refused at Leeds tips and on bulky collection |
| Disposable barbecue | Black bin, cold and wrapped | Leave until the next day first |

| Single item, for example one barbecue | from £24.99 |
| Garden waste | from £24.99 |
| Quarter van load, a patio set and a parasol | from £50 |
| Half van load, a full end of season clear out | from £100 |

Heavy cast iron, stone benches and concrete parasol bases are priced by weight instead: 100kg is £68 and 200kg is £136. We tell you which table applies when you send the photo, and that price does not move on the day. Please return any gas bottle to its supplier before we arrive. The bottle usually belongs to them, and returning it is free. Everything else we lift from the garden, the side passage or the shed. See our garden waste collection page or the full Leeds rubbish removal prices for 2026.

When is it worth paying someone to take it?
Pay once the free routes have run out.
- It will not fit in your car. A six seater dining set or a corner rattan sofa needs a van, and a van needs a tip permit.
- You have more than five items. The council collection takes five, and every chair counts.
- It is in the garage or round the back. The council crew will not collect from garages or outhouses.
- It is part of a bigger garden job. Old furniture usually comes out alongside a rotten shed, decking or green waste. Our guide to garden clearance costs in Leeds covers those jobs.
Whoever you use, check their licence on the Environment Agency public register before they load up. If your old furniture is fly tipped, you can be fined as well as the person who dumped it.
FAQs
Will Leeds City Council collect garden furniture?
The council’s page lists chairs and tables among the furniture it takes, with up to five items per collection and one free collection a year. Each chair counts as an item, everything must be outside your boundary before 7am, and nothing is collected from garages or communal areas.
Can I put a gas bottle in my black bin?
No. Leeds City Council says gas bottles cannot go in the black bin, at the recycling centres or on the bulky collection. Return the empty to the supplier, for Calor that is a Calor Centre or Calor retailer.
Can I put a disposable barbecue in the bin straight after using it?
No. Leave it until at least the next day so it is fully cold, soak it in water, wrap it in foil and then put it in the black bin. That is Leeds City Council’s own advice after bin wagon fires.
Do you take broken plastic garden chairs?
Yes. Condition does not matter to us because broken furniture goes for recycling or disposal rather than resale. A few chairs fit in the single item price from £24.99, a full patio set is usually a quarter load from £50.
