Wakefield Bulky Waste Collection: Council or Same Day
Wakefield Council charges £35 for up to three items for a bulky household collection in Wakefield, covering up to 3 items per collection. Booked through Wakefield MyAccount. Fridges and freezers are included in the three item allowance, mattresses and beds too. The council will not take trade or business waste on a household booking, and items must usually be left where the crew can reach them without entering the house. If the council wait is longer than your deadline, or your items fall outside the scheme, a licensed private collector such as Kruze covers Wakefield from £24.99, often the same day, under Waste Carrier Licence CBDU597687. Call or WhatsApp 07436 120271.
Can’t wait for the council? Kruze collects in Wakefield the same day from £24.99. We load everything, take items the council refuses, and every job comes with a waste transfer note from a licensed carrier (CBDU597687).

Wakefield’s three item cap is the tightest in the area, and it is a hard cap rather than a band. Calderdale gives you five for £25 and Barnsley lets you add items at £8.75. Wakefield gives you three. A bedroom clear out is routinely a bed, a mattress, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers, which is four, and that is two bookings.
What counts as bulky waste?
Bulky waste is household waste that will not fit in your wheeled bin. In practice that means furniture, mattresses and divan bases, sofas and armchairs, wardrobes and chests of drawers, white goods such as washing machines, dryers and fridges, televisions and other electricals, carpets and underlay, and garden furniture.
What it is not is builders waste. Rubble, soil, hardcore, plasterboard, tiles, bathroom suites and kitchen units sit outside almost every council bulky scheme in the country, Wakefield Council included, because they are heavy and because a lot of it is construction and demolition waste rather than household waste. That is the single most common reason a Wakefield booking gets refused after it has been paid for.
Option 1: the Wakefield Council collection
The council route is the cheapest way to move a small number of ordinary household items in Wakefield, and for many people it is the right answer. You book online, you pay by card, you put the items out on the morning, and they go.
Its limits are consistent and worth knowing before you book:
- You wait. Booked through Wakefield MyAccount. Council schemes are scheduled rounds, not a response service.
- You are capped. up to 3 items per collection.
- The list is closed. Anything outside the standard list is refused or requoted, and refusals happen after payment.
- You do the lifting. Items must be at the boundary or an agreed accessible point. Council crews do not clear from inside a property, upstairs, or from a loft.
Option 2: a licensed man and van
A private collector is a different product rather than a more expensive version of the same one. You are paying for speed, for labour, and for the awkward items the council scheme excludes.
- Same day or next day is normal rather than exceptional.
- We carry it out. Upstairs, back garden, loft, garage, cellar. You do not move anything to the kerb.
- Mixed loads are fine. Furniture, bags, a bit of rubble and an old fridge can go on the same job.
- You get a waste transfer note, which is the document that proves your waste was handled legally.
Which is cheaper in Wakefield, the council or a man and van?
The honest answer is that the council is cheaper on price and a man and van is cheaper on everything else. Here is the same job costed both ways, a three seat sofa, a double mattress and a washing machine:
| Cost | |
|---|---|
| Wakefield Council | £35, because three items is exactly the allowance |
| Kruze | £96 for the sofa, £60 for the mattress and £45 for the washing machine, so £201 |
Three items for £35 is the single best value booking in our whole service area, and if your clearance happens to be exactly three items you should use it. The trap is the fourth item. There is no per item top up published, so a fourth item means a second £35 booking and a second wait, and at that point the arithmetic changes completely.
Use the council when your items are ordinary, few, already at ground level, and you can wait. Use a man and van when you have a deadline, the items are upstairs or heavy, the load is mixed, or something on your list is outside the council’s standard items.
What bulky waste removal costs with Kruze in Wakefield
Every price includes labour, disposal and a waste transfer note. Nothing is added afterwards.

|---|---|
| Single item or minimum charge | from £24.99 |
| Quarter van load | from £50 |
| Half van load | from £100 |
| Full van load | from £200 |
Common single items:
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Single mattress | £45 |
| Double mattress | £60 |
| King mattress | £70 |
| Divan base | £45 |
| Washing machine | £45 |
| Tumble dryer | £54 |
| Television | £45 |
| Fridge or freezer | from £60 |
| Two door wardrobe | £54 |
| Trampoline | £54 |
Sofas are priced by the seat, including labour and disposal:
| Seats | Price |
|---|---|
| 1 | £54 |
| 2 | £72 |
| 3 | £96 |
| 4 | £114 |
| 5 | £132 |
Add £5 per seat for a recliner, and count a corner sofa as one seat more than it looks. The minimum charge covers up to 40kg, which is roughly six to eight black bin bags.
Sofas, mattresses and fridges need special handling
These three come up on nearly every Wakefield bulky booking and each is controlled differently.
Sofas and armchairs are upholstered domestic seating, which is POPs waste. They have to be kept separate from other waste and incinerated at an authorised facility. They cannot go in a skip. This is why a sofa is priced per seat rather than by volume.
Mattresses are not POPs, whatever you may read elsewhere. They are charged per item for a much more ordinary reason: the springs will not compact and the foam springs back, so they are refused by skips, and they go to a specialist recycler that separates foam, fibre and springs.
Fridges and freezers are not POPs either. They are controlled under WEEE and the F-gas rules, because the coolant and the insulating foam both have to be degassed at a licensed facility before anything else happens to the unit.
Fridges, freezers, mattresses and beds all count as ordinary items against the three item allowance in Wakefield. A fridge and a mattress together therefore use two thirds of your booking before you have cleared any furniture.
Taking it to the tip yourself in Wakefield
Wakefield Council runs three household waste recycling centres, at Wakefield, South Kirkby and Glasshoughton. Household waste is free to drop off, so if the items fit in a car this is the cheapest option available and worth using.
The catch in Wakefield is that you need a permit just to prove you live here, before any question of vehicle size. On top of that, a trailer of any size behind a van, pickup or SUV needs a commercial vehicle permit. You can apply online or through the contact centre on 0345 8 506 506, but it is another step before you load anything.
So the tip works well for a boot-load. It stops working the moment the thing you need to move will not fit in a car, which is most sofas, most mattresses, most wardrobes and every fridge, or the moment you would need a van you do not have a permit for.
Why using a licensed carrier matters in Wakefield
If you pay someone to take your waste and they fly tip it, the liability comes back to you. That is not a scare story, it is how the duty of care in section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 works. A householder who fails it can be issued a fixed penalty, and a business faces an unlimited fine.
Two things protect you, and both take a minute:
- Check the carrier is registered. Search the Environment Agency public register. Kruze is CBDU597687, upper tier.
- Get a waste transfer note. Every legitimate collection produces one. Kruze issues a digital note on every job automatically.
Anyone quoting cash with no paperwork and no licence number is not cheaper. They are a liability you are carrying on their behalf.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I have four items, not three?
Wakefield charges £35 for up to three and publishes no per-item top up, so a fourth item means a second £35 booking and a second wait. A bedroom clear out is routinely a bed, a mattress, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers, which is four. That is the point where a single collection usually works out better.
Do I need a permit for the Wakefield tip?
Yes, one to prove you live in the district, before any question of vehicle size. A trailer of any size behind a van, pickup or SUV also needs a commercial vehicle permit on top.
How quickly can you collect bulky waste in Wakefield?
Usually the same day if you call before noon and a van is free, and next day otherwise. We run seven days a week.
Do I have to carry things outside?
No. That is the main practical difference from the council scheme. We collect from wherever the item stands, including upstairs and back gardens.
Do you take items Wakefield Council refuses?
Generally yes. Bathroom suites, kitchen units, sheds, rubble, mirrors and mixed loads are all normal work for us and all sit outside the council’s standard list.
Is a man and van worth it for a single item?
For one ordinary item at ground level with no deadline, the council is cheaper and we will say so. It is worth it when the item is upstairs, heavy, awkward, or needed gone this week.
What if my items are a mix of furniture and bags?
That is fine and it is priced by load rather than per item, which usually works out better than counting individual pieces.
