Leeds Tip Opening Times 2026: Every Centre

Leeds has eight household waste recycling centres, open seven days a week. From 30 March to 25 October 2026 they open 8am to 6pm, and through winter they open 8am to 4pm, with last entry 15 minutes before closing. They are closed only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Fridges and freezers are temporarily not accepted at any of them. This guide takes every Leeds tip site by site, explains the van permit rule that catches people out, and sets out exactly what the sites will not take. Leeds tip opening times in 2026

All eight sites share the same hours, and those hours change with the season.

Last entry is 15 minutes before closing, so aim to arrive in good time. The sites are open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Weekend mornings and sunny bank holidays are the busiest, so a weekday visit will save you queuing.

Every Leeds household waste recycling centre

Here are all eight sites with their addresses. Any Leeds resident can use any of them.

Two site notes worth knowing. Kirkstall is the only Leeds site that accepts asbestos, at its waste transfer station by appointment, charged from £72.31. Otley is not currently accepting rubble, plasterboard or upholstered seating such as sofas and armchairs, so take those elsewhere.

Fridges and freezers: no Leeds tip is taking them right now

Leeds City Council has stopped accepting fridges and freezers at all eight household waste recycling centres. The council says it is a national shortage of the specialist plants that degas and recycle them, and that its storage areas at the sites are full, so it cannot safely take any more. It describes the suspension as temporary and has not given an end date.

This catches people out for a simple reason. Each site’s own page on leeds.gov.uk still lists “Fridges and freezers” under the materials it accepts. The suspension notice sits at the top of the main recycling sites page, and it overrides that list. If you load a fridge for Middleton or Kirkstall today, expect to bring it home again.

The council’s own advice is to keep the appliance until the service resumes, and it points out that retailer take back schemes and specialist collection companies are not affected. So you have three honest options.

• Buying a new one? Ask the retailer to take the old one away when they deliver. This is usually the cheapest route and it has to be arranged at the point of order, not on the day.
• Can you store it? Then waiting costs nothing, and the tip will be free again once it reopens to fridges.

Do you need to book a Leeds tip slot?

No. General household waste does not need a booking, so you can turn up within opening hours. There are still a few rules the sites enforce on every visit.

• You must live within the Leeds City Council boundary to use the sites.
• Children under 16 and pets must stay in the vehicle at all times.
• For safety reasons you cannot enter a site on foot, so you need a vehicle.

The only appointment needed is for asbestos at Kirkstall, which is handled separately for safety reasons.

Taking a van, pickup or trailer? You need a permit

This is the one that trips people up. A normal car, estate, hatchback or saloon needs no permit. But if you turn up in a van, a four wheel drive pickup, or towing a trailer, you need a free commercial vehicle permit booked in advance, or you will be turned away at the gate.

The permit scheme is free but limited. Residents can get up to 12 permits a year for their own van, and fewer for borrowed, hired or company vehicles. So if you have hired a van for the weekend to shift a house clearance, sort the permit first, or the trip is wasted.

What the Leeds tips will not take

The sites take most household waste and recycling, but there are firm limits and some outright bans. These are the ones that send people home with a full boot.

DIY and building waste is capped. Free disposal of DIY waste is limited to four visits per month per household, and each visit allows either two 50 litre bags or one large item up to 2m by 0.75m. That covers rubble, hardcore, soil, plasterboard and sanitary ceramics like old toilets and sinks. Anything over that allowance is charged at the Kirkstall transfer station.

Tyres and chemicals are limited. You can bring up to four car or motorcycle tyres, and up to five litres each of engine oil, garden chemicals or household chemicals.

Not accepted at all:

• Tarmac and asphalt
• Industrial, forklift and earth moving tyres
• Gas cylinders and fire extinguishers
• Pet waste (large quantities are taken at Kirkstall only, for a fee)
• Asbestos, except at Kirkstall by appointment
• Electric vehicle batteries

Trade and business waste is banned

The recycling centres are for household waste only. Bringing trade or business waste to a Leeds tip is an offence that can lead to a fine or imprisonment, and that includes landlords bringing waste from a rented property they own. Every Leeds tip, site by site

All eight sites share the same hours, the same resident rule and the same van permit scheme. They are not identical, though. Two have a reuse shop, two have a paid weighbridge for business waste, one takes asbestos, and one is taking far less than the rest at the moment. Middleton tip

Middleton is on Holme Well Road, LS10 4TQ, and the entrance is easy to miss. The council’s directions are to carry on past the supermarket entrance, stay on Holme Well Road and follow it round the outside of the car park until you reach the recycling centre gate. Hours are 8am to 6pm until 25 October 2026, then 8am to 4pm. It takes the full household list, including furniture, mattresses, carpets, paint, garden waste and up to four tyres, but not fridges while the suspension lasts. Wondering how to dispose of carpet? Cut it into rolls and it fits in most cars. If you are clearing a house in Middleton and the load will not fit in a car, that is where a collection starts to make more sense than several trips.

Kirkstall tip

Kirkstall, on Evanston Avenue, LS4 2HR, does more than any other Leeds site. It is the only one that accepts asbestos from householders, at its waste transfer station by appointment with 48 hours’ notice, charged from £72.31 for up to 200kg, packaged the way the council’s asbestos disposal guidance sets out. It also has a paid waste transfer station with a weighbridge for business waste, which is the legal route for traders and landlords, and it is where large quantities of pet waste go, for a fee.

Kirkstall also has the Revive Leeds reuse shop, with its own car park and pedestrian access from Evanston Avenue. The council lists the shop as open 10am to 5:30pm, with its car park closing at 4pm. Kirkstall additionally takes Tetra Pak cartons, coffee pods and paper tubes with metal ends, which not every site lists.

Meanwood tip

Meanwood is on Meanwood Road, LS7 2LP. It runs the standard household list with no reuse shop, no weighbridge and no asbestos. What time does Meanwood tip close? 6pm until Sunday 25 October 2026, and 4pm from Monday 26 October, with last entry 15 minutes before. Like every site, it is busiest at weekends and on bank holidays, and the council itself says weekdays are quieter.

Seacroft tip and the Revive shop

Seacroft is on Limewood Road, LS14 1LU. Its Revive Leeds shop was the first reuse shop in the city, run by a community interest group formed by the charities SLATE and SVP. The council lists the Seacroft shop as open 10am to 3:30pm, which is shorter than the tip itself, so if the shop is the reason for your trip, go early. Seacroft also runs a waste transfer station with a weighbridge for business waste. What time does Seacroft tip close? The same as the rest, 6pm in summer and 4pm in winter.

Yeadon tip

Yeadon is on Milner’s Road, LS19 7JE, and handy for Guiseley and Horsforth. It takes the full list, plus coffee, tea and hot chocolate pods and paper containers with metal ends such as crisp tubes. No shop, no weighbridge, no asbestos.

Pudsey tip

Pudsey is on Richardshaw Road on the Grangefield Industrial Estate, LS28 6LG. It runs the standard household list. If you are coming from Pudsey or Bramley in a van, remember the permit rule applies here exactly as it does everywhere else.

Otley tip (Ellar Ghyll)

Otley is the site to check before you set off. The council’s page says it is not currently accepting inert waste, meaning rubble and plasterboard. Its accepted list is also far shorter than the other seven. It names car and household batteries, cardboard, electrical items, energy saving bulbs, engine oil, fluorescent tubes, garden waste, general waste, glass, reuse items, scrap metal, textiles, vegetable oil and wood. Furniture, mattresses, carpets, paint, tyres and household chemicals do not appear on it. Wetherby tip (Thorp Arch)

The Wetherby site is on the Thorp Arch Industrial Estate, LS23 7BJ, which is why so many people search for “Thorp Arch tip” rather than Wetherby. It takes the full household list and is the only Leeds site whose page lists printer cartridges. For anyone in Wetherby or Boston Spa it is the nearest by some distance.

Before you pay anyone, try the Revive shops

If what you are getting rid of still works, the honest first step is not a waste company at all, and that includes us. The Revive Leeds shops at Kirkstall and Seacroft take furniture, working electrical items, clothing, bikes, toys, books and household bits as donations and sell them on cheaply. The tip and the shop both need you to bring the item there yourself. When that is the problem, because it is too heavy, too big for the car, upstairs, or trade waste the tip will not take, a collection is the right answer. The Leeds Council bulky waste collection service is worth checking first if you are a private resident with a handful of eligible items.

What to do when the tip cannot help

The tip is great for a car boot of general waste. It is no help when you hit one of these, which is most bigger jobs.

• You have more DIY waste than the monthly allowance.
• You do not have a van permit and cannot fit it in a car.
• The item is banned, or the load is trade or landlord waste.
• You cannot lift it, transport it, or get to a site in opening hours.

Can I take a van to a Leeds tip?
