Before any cooker leaves a Leeds kitchen it has to be safely disconnected, and for a gas cooker that means a Gas Safe registered engineer, not you and not the person collecting it. Once it is disconnected, the cheapest routes are free. If you are buying a new cooker, the retailer has to offer to take the old one back. Leeds City Council collects cookers as part of its free once a year collection of up to five items. The tip takes electrical appliances if you can lift one into a car. If none of that works, Kruze collects disconnected cookers, ovens and hobs from £24.99, carried out of the kitchen by two people. We are a licensed waste carrier (CBDU597687), we answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and every job comes with a waste transfer note. Old cookers are mostly steel, so they go for metal and electrical recycling rather than landfill.

Who can disconnect a gas cooker?

A Gas Safe registered engineer. The Health and Safety Executive’s domestic gas FAQs explain the one narrow exception. A freestanding cooker on a flexible bayonet hose can be moved temporarily, for example to clean behind it. Any other installation or reinstallation is gas work and must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Checked 27/10/2026.

In practice that means pulling the bayonet off the wall to get rid of a cooker for good is a job for an engineer, who will check and cap the supply so nothing leaks. The HSE also warns that appliances removed unsafely can leave open ended pipes behind. When you book, ask the engineer to confirm their ID card covers cookers. You can find or check an engineer on the Gas Safe Register or by calling 0800 408 5500.

If you are having a new gas cooker fitted, the same engineer usually disconnects the old one on the same visit. That is the cheapest way to do it.

Kruze does not disconnect gas or electric supplies. We collect the cooker once it is safely off.

What about electric cookers, ovens and hobs?

A freestanding electric cooker on a plug can simply be unplugged. Most full size electric cookers and built in ovens are wired into their own cooker circuit with a wall switch, and many hobs are wired in too. Disconnecting a hard wired appliance should be done by a qualified electrician, who will make the cable safe and leave it terminated.

Built in ovens and hobs also need taking out of the kitchen units. An oven is usually held in its housing by two or four screws through the front frame. A hob sits in a cut out in the worktop, held by clips underneath. If you are replacing them, the fitter normally removes the old ones.

Will the retailer take my old cooker away?

If you are buying a new one, yes, they have to offer a route. Under the WEEE rules, retailers must offer to take back an old appliance of the same type when they sell you a new one, whether you buy in store, online or by mail order. GOV.UK guidance says the in store service must be free, and you get at least 28 days to bring the old item in. Retailers can charge to cover transport if they collect from your home. Checked 27/10/2026.

So the free version is carrying your old cooker into the shop. The convenient version is ticking the collection box when you order, which usually costs extra and often depends on the old cooker being disconnected and ready when the delivery crew arrives. Ask the retailer what they need before delivery day. Many crews will not touch a cooker still connected to gas.

Will Leeds City Council collect a cooker?

Yes. Cookers, washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers are all on the list for the Leeds unwanted items collection. Every household gets one free collection a year, April to March, for up to five items, then up to three more at £30 each. Households on council tax support get up to four free. Checked 27/10/2026.

The cooker has to be outside within your boundary before 7am, movable by two people, and the crew will not come into the house. Cookers are heavy and awkward, so getting one out to the drive is the hard part. Bookings open up to four weeks ahead.

Can I take a cooker to the tip?

Leeds has eight household waste recycling centres, free to Leeds residents arriving by car or bicycle. Electrical appliances and scrap metal are on the accepted list at sites such as Middleton. Vans and trailers need a council permit, and staff cannot help you unload. Fridges and freezers are temporarily not accepted. Checked 27/10/2026.

A single oven or a hob fits in most cars. A full size freestanding cooker usually does not, and it is heavy enough that lifting it into a boot alone is a real injury risk.

What does Kruze charge for cooker removal?

Appliance collection starts from £24.99 for a single item. The final price depends on the size and weight, so send a photo and you get a fixed figure back before we come. For comparison, our fixed price for a washing machine is £45 and a tumble dryer is £54.

Single appliance, such as a hob or built in ovenfrom £24.99
Washing machine£45
Tumble dryer£54
Fridge or freezerfrom £60
Heavy items, such as a range cooker, by weight£68 per 100kg

If you are refitting the whole kitchen, the cooker usually goes with the units in one load. Our appliance disposal page lists everything we take, and our guide to disposing of electricals in Leeds covers smaller items. If the fridge is going too, see fridge and freezer disposal in Leeds.

What happens to an old cooker?

Cookers are classed as waste electrical and electronic equipment, so they should go to a facility that strips out the steel, copper and glass for recycling. They should not go in a general skip bound for landfill. Whoever collects yours should give you a waste transfer note that says where it went.

Check the collector’s licence before the cooker leaves. If an unlicensed collector fly tips it, the householder can be fined too, with a default fixed penalty of £200 under GOV.UK guidance. Kruze’s licence, CBDU597687, is on the Environment Agency public register.
