Furniture Removal in Leeds: Cost Per Item, Council, Tip and Charity
Furniture removal in Leeds costs from £24.99 for a single item with Kruze, with fixed prices per piece: a three seater sofa is £96, a double mattress £60, a two door wardrobe £54, and a full van load of mixed furniture from £200. We lift from the room it sits in, any day of the week, and every job comes with a waste transfer note from a licensed carrier (CBDU597687). Before you pay anyone, know the three cheaper routes: Leeds City Council collects up to five items free once a year, the tip is free if you can get it there in a car, and charities collect furniture for nothing if it is in saleable condition with its fire label. This page sets out what each route costs, what each one refuses, and the one rule about sofas and armchairs that changes where they can go. If you are looking to move furniture to a new address rather than get rid of it, that is a different job, covered on our furniture removals page.
What Kruze charges to remove furniture in Leeds
Most furniture is priced per item, so you know the figure before the van arrives. Larger clear outs are priced by how much of the van they fill.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Single item, minimum charge | from £24.99 |
| Sofa, 1 seat | £54 |
| Sofa, 2 seats | £72 |
| Sofa, 3 seats | £96 |
| Sofa, 4 seats | £114 |
| Sofa, 5 seats | £132 |
| Corner sofa | count one extra seat |
| Recliner | add £5 per seat |
| Single mattress | £45 |
| Double mattress | £60 |
| King mattress | £70 |
| Divan base | £45 |
| Wardrobe, 2 doors | £54 |
| Wardrobe, 3 doors | £72 |
| Large sliding wardrobe | £96 |
| Quarter van load | from £50 |
| Half van load | from £100 |
| Full van load | from £200 |
The price includes the two of us carrying it out, the disposal and the paperwork. There is nothing to add on top. Tables, chairs, chests of drawers, bookcases and bed frames are not on the itemised list, so they are priced by van space: a dining table and four chairs is normally a quarter load, a bedroom’s worth of furniture is usually half a van. Send a photo on WhatsApp and you get a fixed figure back.
Two things make a furniture job cost more than the table suggests, and we would rather say so here. A sofa that will not fit through the door has to be cut down in the room, which takes longer. A wardrobe that is still assembled on the third floor of a flat with no lift is a two person carry down every flight. Tell us about stairs and access when you ask for the price, and the price you are given is the price you pay.
The free routes, and when each one fails
Paying for furniture removal only makes sense once the free options have said no. In Leeds there are three of them.
Leeds City Council unwanted items collection. Every household gets one free collection per financial year, April to March, for up to five items. After that you can book up to three more at £30 each, and households on council tax support get all four free. Items go outside, within your boundary, before 7am on the day, and the crew can arrive any time up to 5pm. The catch for furniture is the item count: the council counts each part of a dismantled piece as an item, and its own example is a bed, which counts as four (frame, slats, mattress and headboard). A double bed and a wardrobe can use the whole allowance. The crew will not come inside, and bookings open only four weeks ahead, so in busy months the calendar can show nothing at all. The tip. Leeds runs eight household waste recycling centres and they are free to use if you live in the Leeds City Council area and arrive by car or on a bicycle. A van, a large vehicle or a trailer needs a permit from the council first. Staff cannot help you unload, so the furniture has to come out of the vehicle on its own, which rules out a three seater for most people on their own. One site is also refusing a whole category of furniture at the moment: Otley (Ellar Ghyll) is not currently accepting upholstered seating, including sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, cushioned dining and office chairs, footstools and beanbags, checked on the council’s site on 02/10/2026. If that is what you are carrying, choose a different site and check its page before you set off.
Charity collection. The British Heart Foundation, Emmaus Leeds, Sue Ryder and St Gemma’s Hospice all collect furniture free, and if one of them will take yours, use them. The condition is that the charity has to be able to sell it. The BHF’s own rules are typical: upholstered items must carry a fire safety label firmly attached or sewn in, there must be no rips or tears exposing the inner fabric, items must be clean and complete with no missing doors or drawers, and the local shop contacts you within five working days to agree a date. We have compared every free option in Leeds, including the fire label catch, in our guide to free furniture collection in Leeds.
| Route | Cost | Takes furniture from inside? | Refuses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leeds council collection | 1 free a year, then £30, 5 items each | No, kerbside only | Mirrors and mirrored furniture, anything over 5 items |
| The tip | Free by car, permit for vans | You unload it yourself | Upholstered seating at Otley at present, trade waste |
| Charity collection | Free | Yes, if saleable | No fire label, rips, stains, missing parts |
| Kruze | from £24.99 per item | Yes, any room, any floor | Nothing in a normal home |
Why sofas and armchairs are priced and handled differently
Upholstered seating is the one kind of furniture with its own disposal law. GOV.UK guidance from the Environment Agency lists sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, recliners, kitchen and dining chairs, office chairs made to domestic fire standards, futons, beanbags and sofa cushions as waste that may contain persistent organic pollutants, the flame retardant chemicals used in the foam and fabric. That waste has to be kept apart from everything else and sent for destruction at a permitted facility, not landfilled and not crushed into a general skip. The guidance was updated on 29 July 2026 to exclude small scatter cushions under 60cm by 60cm. Source: GOV.UK, manage waste upholstered domestic seating containing POPs.
That is the reason a sofa carries a per seat price rather than a van space price. It travels separately, it is recorded separately on the waste transfer note, and it goes to a facility that can take it. It is also why Otley’s tip has stopped taking seating for now, and why a charity that cannot sell your sofa will not take it even for free. Mattresses are not covered by the same rule, but they are priced per item for a different reason: the springs will not compact and the foam springs back, so each one takes the space of several bags and goes to a specialist recycler that separates foam, fibres and springs.
What furniture removal costs with the neighbouring councils
Leeds is the only council in our area that gives every household a free collection each year. If you are reading this from across the border, the council route still exists, it just costs money from the first item.
| Council | Bulky collection charge |
|---|---|
| Leeds | 1 free per year, then £30 for up to 5 items |
| Bradford | £30 for 3 items |
| Calderdale (Halifax) | £25 for 5 items, then £5 per extra item |
| Kirklees (Huddersfield) | £11.66 per standard item, £31.80 per sofa, armchair, recliner or mattress, up to 6 |
| Wakefield | £35 for up to 3 items |
| Barnsley | £28 for up to 2 items, then £8.75 each, up to 12 |
| North Yorkshire (Harrogate) | minimum £37 for up to 2 items |
Sources: each council’s own bulky collection page, all checked 02/10/2026 and listed on our West Yorkshire tips and bulky collections guide. Council charges change every April, so confirm before you book.
The comparison worth making is per item. A sofa and two armchairs through Kirklees is three seating items at £31.80 each, £95.40, booked for a date the council picks. Kruze’s price for the same three pieces depends on the seats, a three seater and two single armchairs is £96 and £54 and £54, carried out of the room on a day you choose. For one broken dining chair the council wins easily. For a full living room, the gap closes and the convenience starts to matter.
When paying for furniture removal is the right call
Honest rule: pay when the free routes cannot do the job, not before. That is usually one of these.
- You have more than five items, or a second collection in the same year. The council allowance is gone and the next booking is £30 a time.
- It is inside and you cannot carry it. The council crew will not enter the property, the tip needs you to lift it out of your own vehicle, and a charity will only come for things it can sell.
- It has to go this week. Council slots open four weeks ahead and can be full. We collect the same day in most of Leeds, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- You are a landlord, a letting agent or a business. The council scheme is for private residents only, and the tips refuse trade waste. A licensed collection with a waste transfer note is the only compliant route.
- It is a house clearance, not a few pieces. A whole property is priced by the load rather than the item. See house clearance in Leeds.
Whoever you pay, check they are a registered waste carrier before the van leaves. If your furniture is fly tipped, the person who handed it over can be fined as well as the person who dumped it. Kruze is licensed by the Environment Agency (CBDU597687) and accredited under the Leeds Accredited Waste Carrier Scheme, and you get the transfer note on every job. Over 85% of what we collect is recycled or upcycled rather than sent to landfill. Flat pack and solid wood furniture that is still usable goes for reuse first.
What to do before the collection
- Check the fire label under the cushions and along the frame of any sofa or chair. If it is there and the item is clean, try a charity first and keep your money.
- Count the items the council’s way. A dismantled bed is four. If you are over five, the council will not take the rest on the same booking.
- Measure the doorway if a sofa or wardrobe came in through a window or was built in the room. Tell us, and we bring the tools.
- Clear the route. Two people carrying a three seater need the hallway empty and the door propped.
- Send a photo of each piece on WhatsApp. You get a fixed price back, usually within minutes, and the price does not change on the day.
Furniture removal in Leeds: FAQs
How much does it cost to get rid of a sofa in Leeds?
With Kruze, £54 for a single seater, £72 for a two seater and £96 for a three seater, carried out from any room and disposed of as upholstered seating under a waste transfer note. The council collects it as one of your five free items once a year if you can get it outside. Our guide to getting rid of a sofa in Leeds compares every route.
Will Leeds City Council take furniture from inside my house?
No. Items must be outside and within your property boundary before 7am on the collection day, placed so two people can lift them. If you cannot get it outside, that is the gap a paid collection fills.
Can I take a sofa to the tip in Leeds?
At most Leeds recycling centres yes, by car, and you unload it yourself. Otley (Ellar Ghyll) is not currently accepting upholstered seating, checked 02/10/2026. Vans and trailers need a council permit first.
Do you take furniture that is broken, damp or without a fire label?
Yes. Condition does not matter to us because the item is going for disposal or recycling rather than resale. It matters a great deal to charities, which is why a sofa without its label is refused at the door.
Do you collect furniture outside Leeds?
Yes, across Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield, Wakefield, Harrogate and Barnsley at the same per item prices. See rubbish removal in Leeds for the full Leeds service, or the bulky waste collection page for the item list.
