Student Moves in Leeds: Costs and When to Book
Leeds has one of the largest student populations in the country, and almost all of it moves in the same two weeks. That single fact drives both the price and the availability of every van in the city.
What a student move costs

Most single room moves between Hyde Park, Headingley, Burley and Woodhouse come in under two hours, so a van and driver at £75 then £40 is normally the right booking rather than a full crew.
Split it between housemates
If four of you are moving out of the same house into places within a mile or two of each other, one booking doing four drops is far cheaper per person than four separate jobs. The clock runs once and you divide it.
The catch is that everyone has to be genuinely packed when the van arrives. One person still filling bin bags costs the whole group an hour.
When to book
Two windows sell out every year in Leeds:
- The first week of July, when most Leeds student tenancies end
- The last week of September, when the new academic year starts
Book three to four weeks ahead for either. Outside those windows, most midweek days are available at short notice.
The end of tenancy trap
Student contracts usually end at a fixed time on a fixed date, and the house has to be empty and clean. The two things that cost deposits are furniture left behind and rubbish bagged up in the yard.
Leeds does not collect bagged household waste left at the kerb outside your collection day, and fly tipping notices do get issued on student streets in July. If there is a sofa or a mattress nobody is taking, it needs collecting properly rather than leaving on the pavement.

Parking in student Leeds
Hyde Park and Headingley terraces are permit zones with very tight parking in term time. Two things help. Move in the morning, before the street fills up. And if you can, get a housemate to hold the space outside the door until the van arrives.
Storage over summer
If you are going home for the summer and coming back to a different house in September, storing is often cheaper than two full moves plus replacing furniture. We can move into storage and back out again, and the first move is usually the shorter of the two because you are only taking what you are keeping.
A practical checklist

- Bin bags are not boxes. Get proper boxes for books, they are the heaviest thing you own
- Label by room at the destination, not by room at the origin

- Cleaning. Not our job, but it is the other half of the deposit, so put it in the same conversation.

The fly tipping risk nobody mentions
In early July, student streets in Hyde Park and Headingley fill with furniture on pavements. Councils photograph it and trace it, and the paperwork inside a pile is how they find out whose it was.
Under the household duty of care the responsibility sits with whoever produced the waste, so a sofa left outside your old house is your problem even after you have moved out. A licensed collection with a transfer note removes that entirely, and it costs less than a fixed penalty by a wide margin.
Moving into halls
Halls have rules private houses do not. Most Leeds halls run timed move-in slots, some have a one way system through the building, and almost all have a loading bay with a strict time limit.
Check your slot before booking the van, and tell us the time window. A crew that arrives outside the slot waits, and waiting is on the clock.

Booking as a group, practically
One person needs to own the booking. Give us a single name, a single number and the list of drop addresses in the order you want them done, and the whole thing runs as one job on one clock.
What slows a group move down is people not being ready when the van reaches them. Agree a running order the day before and have each person packed and standing by their door for their slot. Four organised drops inside two miles is comfortably a four hour job. The same four drops with someone still filling bags at each stop is closer to seven.
