The cheapest way to get rid of a wardrobe in Leeds is to sell it or give it away if it is in good condition, or book the council’s free collection if it is not. Leeds City Council takes dismantled wardrobes as part of its once a year free collection of up to five items, but refuses any wardrobe with a mirror attached. Charities collect complete wardrobes with every door and drawer present. The tip is free by car, if the panels fit in it. When the wardrobe is upstairs, solid, fitted or mirrored, Kruze removes it for a fixed price: £54 for a two door, £72 for a three door and £96 for a large sliding wardrobe, carried down from the bedroom by two people. We are a licensed waste carrier (CBDU597687), we work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and you get a waste transfer note with every job.

Flat pack, solid or fitted: which do you have?

The type of wardrobe decides almost everything else.

Flat pack wardrobes are chipboard or MDF with cam locks. They come apart with a screwdriver, but chipboard rarely survives a second assembly well. Expect the panels to be worth little second hand unless the wardrobe is nearly new and from a well known range.

Solid wood wardrobes are heavy and often old. Some split into a top, a base and separate doors. They are the ones most worth selling, and the ones most likely to stick on a stair turn.

Fitted wardrobes are fixed to the wall, floor or ceiling, often with sliding doors on a track. They need unscrewing from the room before anything else can happen, and the panels are cut to fit that room, so reuse is unlikely.

Mirrored wardrobes need care. The council will not collect a wardrobe with a mirror attached, and a broken mirror panel is a real injury risk on the stairs. Tape across the glass before moving it.

How do you take a wardrobe apart safely?

Start from the top and work down. Two people make this much safer.

  1. Empty it completely, including the hanging rail and any shelves.
  2. Take the doors off first. Hinges on flat pack wardrobes usually unclip or unscrew from the inside. Sliding doors lift up and out of the bottom track.
  3. Check for a wall strap. Most modern wardrobes have an anti tip bracket screwed into the wall at the top. Undo it before you tilt anything.
  4. Remove the back panel. It is usually thin hardboard held by small nails or tacks.
  5. Undo the cam locks with a flat screwdriver, a quarter turn anticlockwise, and lift the top off. The sides and base then separate.
  6. Bag the fixings and tape them to a panel if the wardrobe might be reused.

A solid wardrobe that will not come apart may need to go out in one piece, tilted down the stairs by two people. If it came into the house before the stair rails were fitted, it may not leave the same way.

Will Leeds City Council collect a wardrobe?

Yes, if it is dismantled and has no mirror. The Leeds unwanted items collection lists dismantled wardrobes among the furniture it takes, and lists wardrobes with a mirror attached among the things it will not collect. Every household gets one free collection a year, April to March, for up to five items, then up to three more at £30 each. Households on council tax support get up to four free. Checked 27/10/2026.

The council counts a dismantled item as several items, so ask when you book how many your wardrobe will count as. Everything must be outside within your boundary before 7am, and the crew will not come in. Anything larger than 6 by 4 feet is refused, which can rule out the side panels of a tall wardrobe left in one piece.

Can you sell, donate or take a wardrobe to the tip?

Selling. Solid wood wardrobes, especially older oak and pine, sell on Facebook Marketplace and eBay when the price is right. Flat pack sells best when it is less than a few years old and you leave it assembled for the buyer to see.

Charity. Most furniture charities want complete, clean items. The British Heart Foundation asks for items to be complete with “no missing doors on wardrobes”, with no obvious stains, rips, marks or odours, and the local shop contacts you within five working days to agree a date. Checked 27/10/2026. Freecycle is a good backstop for a sound wardrobe nobody will pay for.

The tip. Leeds has eight household waste recycling centres, free to Leeds residents by car or bicycle. Vans and trailers need a permit, and staff cannot help you unload. Furniture and wood are on the accepted list at sites such as Middleton. Checked 27/10/2026. Flat pack panels fit in most estate cars once dismantled, solid wardrobes rarely do.

When is paying for removal worth it?

When the wardrobe is upstairs and heavy, when it has a mirror, when you have already used your council collection, or when it has to go this week. Council slots open up to four weeks ahead and the crew will not carry anything down for you. A three door solid wardrobe is a two person lift on a straight stair and a careful one on a turn.

Whoever you pay, check they are a registered waste carrier. If an unlicensed collector dumps your wardrobe, the council can fine the householder too, with a default fixed penalty of £200 under GOV.UK guidance. Kruze’s licence, CBDU597687, is on the Environment Agency register. Usable wardrobes go for reuse first, and over 85% of what we collect is recycled or upcycled rather than landfilled.
