What Won’t the Tip Take in Harrogate?
North Yorkshire refuses clinical waste, needles and dead animals at every site. Then it does something no other council in our area does: it accepts commercial waste at all of its household waste recycling centres except one, and the exception is Harrogate Stonefall. So the only council here that will take trade waste at a tip refuses it at the Harrogate site specifically. You also need to register to use the sites, a requirement live since 27 April 2026. Kruze works across Harrogate and North Yorkshire for the loads Stonefall will not take, from £24.99, under Waste Carrier Licence CBDU597687. Call or WhatsApp 07436 120271.
What North Yorkshire Council refuses, in full
Start with the flat refusals, because they are short. On North Yorkshire’s list of what you can deliver, three things are marked No: clinical waste, needles, and dead animals. Those are refused at every site in the county.
Then the part that makes Harrogate unlike anywhere else in this comparison. “We accept certain types of commercial waste at all of our household waste recycling centres, except Harrogate Stonefall.” Scrap metal, clothing and plastic bottles are taken free of charge in any volume as commercial waste, and other types are chargeable.
There is also a mobile service, and it refuses far more than the fixed sites. Tyres, hardcore, rubble, plasterboard and asbestos are not accepted at any mobile centre, and neither is commercial or charity waste.
Two access rules matter as much as the item list. You must register to use North Yorkshire’s household waste recycling centres, which became a requirement on 27 April 2026. And people from outside the county can use the sites but “will be charged unless mutual arrangements are in place with neighbouring councils.” Tyres are chargeable for everyone, because, in the council’s own words, they “are not classed as household waste.”

The catch: Harrogate is the one town where the council takes trade waste, and the one site where it does not
This is the strangest single fact we have found across nine of these comparisons, and it is worth stating twice because it reads like a typo the first time.
North Yorkshire accepts commercial waste at its household waste recycling centres. Except at Harrogate Stonefall.
For a small business anywhere else in the county, that is a genuinely useful route. Scrap metal, clothing and plastic bottles go in free in any volume, other types are priced, and you are not breaking any rule by turning up. If you run that same business in Harrogate, your nearest site is the single exception in the county.
It is a good reminder that “can I take this to the tip” is never a national question and rarely even a council-wide one. Here it is decided at the level of one site. Check Stonefall’s own page before you drive anywhere, and if you are trade, expect the answer at that gate to be no while the answer twenty miles north is yes.
Registration changed who can use these sites, and it is recent
Since 27 April 2026 you have to register to use a North Yorkshire household waste recycling centre. That is new enough that plenty of people in Harrogate have not done it, and it is the most likely reason to be turned around at the entrance this year.
The county also prices by geography rather than refusing by geography, which is unusual. Bradford simply bars residents of other councils. North Yorkshire lets them in and charges them, unless a mutual arrangement exists with the neighbouring council.
And the sentence that explains the tyre charge is the clearest piece of writing any of these seven councils produces: “We charge for the disposal of tyres as they are not classed as household waste.” That is the whole logic of a household waste recycling centre in eighteen words. The site exists for household waste. Everything that is not household waste is either refused, restricted, or charged for, and which of the three you get depends entirely on which council you live under.
What Kruze takes, and what it does not
Register with North Yorkshire and use the sites. That is the first advice on this page and it is free. We come after that, not instead of it.
What we do take that Stonefall will not: commercial and trade waste from Harrogate businesses, which is the one thing that site refuses and every other site in the county accepts. Also loads from people clearing a Harrogate property while living outside the county, and anything a mobile centre turns away. Single items from £24.99, a quarter van load from £50, a full house from £150.
What we do not do: clinical waste, needles or sharps, which North Yorkshire refuses and so do we. Nor licensed asbestos removal. We collect cement bonded asbestos and transport it to a licensed specialist under our carrier and broker registration.
Harrogate tip or Kruze, honestly
Use North Yorkshire Council when you are registered, it is household waste, and you are not trade. The county’s accepted list is broad, most of it is free, and the charged items are priced openly rather than hidden behind a booking system. Register first, because that is now the gate.
Use a licensed carrier when you are a business in Harrogate, because Stonefall is the one site in the county closed to you. Or when the load is clinical waste or sharps, which is refused everywhere and needs a specialist rather than us. Or when you are clearing a Harrogate property from outside the county and would rather not be charged at the gate for the privilege.
A worked example. A small builder’s van of clean scrap metal and cardboard.
North Yorkshire Council: Free at almost any North Yorkshire site, and refused at Stonefall, which is the one in Harrogate.
Frequently asked questions
What does Harrogate tip not accept?
Clinical waste, needles and dead animals are refused at every North Yorkshire site. Harrogate Stonefall additionally refuses commercial waste, which every other household waste recycling centre in the county accepts. Tyres are accepted but charged for.
Can a business take waste to a North Yorkshire tip?
At most sites yes. North Yorkshire accepts certain commercial waste at all its household waste recycling centres except Harrogate Stonefall, and takes commercial scrap metal, clothing and plastic bottles free of charge in any volume. Stonefall is the exception.
Do I need to register to use a Harrogate tip?
Yes. Registration to use North Yorkshire household waste recycling centres became a requirement on 27 April 2026. It is separate from any van or trailer permit and it applies to ordinary car users as well.
Can I use a North Yorkshire tip if I live in West Yorkshire?
You can, but you will be charged unless a mutual arrangement is in place with your own council. That is a softer rule than Bradford’s, which bars residents of other local authorities from its sites entirely.
