Yes, and unusually North Yorkshire accepts commercial plasterboard as well as household, which no other council in our area does. DIY amounts are free: under 100 litres, fitting in two 50 litre bags, up to four visits in a four week period. Above that it is chargeable, priced per bag and agreed with staff when you arrive. Plasterboard is capped tightly by every council in our area because it cannot be landfilled with ordinary waste. Kruze takes it as it comes off the wall, tiles and all, across Harrogate and West Yorkshire under Waste Carrier Licence CBDU597687. Call or WhatsApp 07436 120271.

Why plasterboard is separated from everything else

It is not about weight or bulk. It is chemistry.

Plasterboard is gypsum, which is calcium sulphate. Bury it in landfill alongside biodegradable waste and the sulphate is reduced to hydrogen sulphide, a toxic gas that smells of rotten eggs. That is why the Landfill Directive requires gypsum to be kept separate from biodegradable waste, and why every tip on this list has a dedicated plasterboard container rather than letting you put it in the rubble skip.

Three practical consequences:

  • It never goes in the rubble skip, however much it looks like building waste.
  • It never goes in a general waste bin, in any quantity.
  • Contaminated board is worth less and is often refused, because the gypsum has to be recoverable.

The one council here that takes commercial plasterboard

North Yorkshire taking commercial plasterboard is the outlier worth knowing about. Every other council on this list refuses trade waste outright. North Yorkshire has a commercial route instead, which means a builder or a landlord in the Harrogate area has an option that does not exist in Leeds, Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees or Barnsley.

The free allowance, worked through

North Yorkshire’s DIY allowance is generous but it is a volume limit, not a weight one, and 100 litres is less than it sounds when the material is rigid sheet.

  • 100 litres is two 50 litre rubble bags, and that is the free ceiling per visit.
  • Four visits in four weeks means roughly 400 litres a month at no charge.
  • A standard sheet does not fold, so broken-up board packs far better into bags than whole sheets do.

Above that you are into the chargeable route, and the charge is set by agreeing the volume with a member of staff when you arrive rather than by a published rate. That is fine for a bag or two and less comfortable if you have turned up with a van and no idea what it will cost.

The commercial route is the genuinely distinctive part. If you are a builder or a landlord in the Harrogate area, North Yorkshire will take your plasterboard through a paid commercial route. In Leeds, Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees and Barnsley the answer to the same question is simply no.

The trade waste line

Plasterboard is where the trade waste rule bites hardest, because most plasterboard exists because somebody was doing building work.

If the board came out of paid work it is trade waste, and the household route is closed. That catches a builder, a plasterer, a landlord refurbishing a flat, and anyone having work done who offers to take the waste away for the tradesman. Leeds names the case explicitly, warning that a vehicle with “Plastering” on the side will not be allowed to tip plaster or gypsum, and that misuse could be fined or prosecuted.

The one exception in our area is North Yorkshire, which accepts commercial plasterboard through a paid route. Everywhere else, trade means no.

When the council route works, and when it does not

Use North Yorkshire Council when you are within the free DIY allowance, or when you are a business and want a legitimate council route, which they are alone in offering here.

Use a licensed carrier when the volume makes four capped visits impractical, when you would rather have a fixed price than negotiate a volume at the gate, or when you want it collected rather than carried.

Plasterboard is separated at our end and taken to a facility that recovers the gypsum, which is why it is priced apart from general waste rather than by volume alone. We take it tiled, artexed or still screwed to a batten. There is no booking, no weekly cap and no visit allowance to spend.

One safety point that is not a sales line. Artex applied before the 2000s can contain asbestos. If you are pulling down an artexed ceiling and you do not know its age, stop and get it tested. That is not a plasterboard job at that point, and neither we nor your council will take it as one.

Frequently asked questions

Can a builder take plasterboard to a North Yorkshire tip?

Yes, and that is unusual. North Yorkshire accepts commercial plasterboard as well as household. Every other council we cover refuses trade waste outright.

How is the charge worked out?

By volume, agreed with a member of staff when you arrive, priced per standard hardcore and rubble bag. There is no published fixed rate.

Can plasterboard go in a skip?

Only in a dedicated plasterboard skip. It cannot go in a general or mixed skip, because gypsum has to be kept out of the biodegradable waste stream.

Does it have to be dry?

It helps a great deal. Wet plasterboard is much heavier, harder to handle and worth less to a recycler. If it is stacked outside, cover it.

What about plaster, coving and ceiling roses?

Same stream. Bags of plaster, coving and ceiling roses are all gypsum products and are treated the same way by councils and by us.

Send a photo on WhatsApp and you get a fixed price back, usually within minutes. Tell us if it is tiled or artexed, because it changes nothing for us and everything for the council route.

Plasterboard rules in the other areas we cover

No two councils here treat plasterboard the same way. Some cap it by bag, some charge by the tonne, one makes you book, and one refuses it if anything is stuck to it.
