Not published, and we are not going to guess. Wakefield’s household waste recycling centres are operated by Renewi, and the council publishes no plasterboard policy of the kind its six neighbours all do. Ring 0345 8 506 506 before you load anything, because every other council in our area restricts plasterboard to named sites with weekly or monthly caps. Plasterboard is capped tightly by every council in our area because it cannot be landfilled with ordinary waste. Kruze takes it as it comes off the wall, tiles and all, across Wakefield and West Yorkshire under Waste Carrier Licence CBDU597687. Call or WhatsApp 07436 120271.

Why plasterboard is separated from everything else

It is not about weight or bulk. It is chemistry.

Plasterboard is gypsum, which is calcium sulphate. Bury it in landfill alongside biodegradable waste and the sulphate is reduced to hydrogen sulphide, a toxic gas that smells of rotten eggs. That is why the Landfill Directive requires gypsum to be kept separate from biodegradable waste, and why every tip on this list has a dedicated plasterboard container rather than letting you put it in the rubble skip.

Three practical consequences:

  • It never goes in the rubble skip, however much it looks like building waste.
  • It never goes in a general waste bin, in any quantity.
  • Contaminated board is worth less and is often refused, because the gypsum has to be recoverable.

The second Wakefield page where the honest answer is a phone number

This is the second Wakefield page where the honest answer is a phone number. The same gap appeared on asbestos. It is not a criticism of the service, which may well be fine. It is a statement about what the council publishes, and we would rather tell you that than invent a policy that turns out to be wrong at the gate.

What the neighbouring councils do, as a rough guide

Since Wakefield publishes nothing, the six councils around it give a reasonable idea of what to expect when you ring.

CouncilWhat they do with plasterboard
LeedsFree, 4 visits a month, 2 bags or one item up to 2m by 0.75m
BradfordTwo sites only, 2 bags a week, £100 a tonne with a £10.50 minimum
CalderdaleThree sites, once a week, 2 sacks, never in the rubble skip
KirkleesBookable, against a shared 12-visit annual allowance
North YorkshireFree under 100 litres, 4 visits per 4 weeks, commercial accepted
BarnsleyOne site, small amounts, must be clean of bonded material

Every single one restricts it to named sites and caps the amount. None of them lets you turn up with a car full. Ask Wakefield about site, quantity and frequency specifically, because those are the three things that vary.

The trade waste line

Plasterboard is where the trade waste rule bites hardest, because most plasterboard exists because somebody was doing building work.

If the board came out of paid work it is trade waste, and the household route is closed. That catches a builder, a plasterer, a landlord refurbishing a flat, and anyone having work done who offers to take the waste away for the tradesman. Leeds names the case explicitly, warning that a vehicle with “Plastering” on the side will not be allowed to tip plaster or gypsum, and that misuse could be fined or prosecuted.

The one exception in our area is North Yorkshire, which accepts commercial plasterboard through a paid route. Everywhere else, trade means no.

When the council route works, and when it does not

We cannot tell you to use the council here, because we do not know what they accept. Call them.

Use a licensed carrier when they say no, when the volume is beyond a car boot, or when the board came out of paid work, which is refused on the household scheme at all three Wakefield sites regardless of what else they take.

What it costs with Kruze

Price
Plasterboard bag, 1m2£105
Plasterboard as part of a mixed loadUp to 10% of the load included
Above 10% of a mixed load£35 contamination charge
Single item or minimum chargefrom £24.99

Plasterboard is separated at our end and taken to a facility that recovers the gypsum, which is why it is priced apart from general waste rather than by volume alone. We take it tiled, artexed or still screwed to a batten. There is no booking, no weekly cap and no visit allowance to spend.

One safety point that is not a sales line. Artex applied before the 2000s can contain asbestos. If you are pulling down an artexed ceiling and you do not know its age, stop and get it tested. That is not a plasterboard job at that point, and neither we nor your council will take it as one.

Frequently asked questions

Why can you not just tell me?

Because Wakefield does not publish it. Six neighbouring councils do, in detail. We are reporting the absence rather than filling it in.

Who actually runs the sites?

Renewi, on the council’s behalf, which is part of why the published detail is thinner than Leeds or Bradford.

Can plasterboard go in a skip?

Only in a dedicated plasterboard skip. It cannot go in a general or mixed skip, because gypsum has to be kept out of the biodegradable waste stream.

Does it have to be dry?

It helps a great deal. Wet plasterboard is much heavier, harder to handle and worth less to a recycler. If it is stacked outside, cover it.

What about plaster, coving and ceiling roses?

Same stream. Bags of plaster, coving and ceiling roses are all gypsum products and are treated the same way by councils and by us.

Book a plasterboard collection in Wakefield

Send a photo on WhatsApp and you get a fixed price back, usually within minutes. Tell us if it is tiled or artexed, because it changes nothing for us and everything for the council route.

Plasterboard rules in the other areas we cover

No two councils here treat plasterboard the same way. Some cap it by bag, some charge by the tonne, one makes you book, and one refuses it if anything is stuck to it.
