Cheapest Time to Move House: A Leeds Guide

Two identical moves can differ by a hundred pounds or more purely on timing. Nothing about the van, the crew or the distance changes. What changes is how many other people want the same slot, and how long the day actually takes once you are in it.

The most expensive day to move is the last Friday of the month

It is the single busiest slot in the industry, and for a good reason. Tenancies usually end at month end, mortgage completions cluster on Fridays because solicitors want the weekend to sort out any problems, and everyone wants the weekend to unpack.

The result is that late month Fridays book out first everywhere, and if you are choosing between a Friday the 30th and a Tuesday the 12th, the Tuesday is easier to book, calmer on the day and more likely to run to time.

Mid week and mid month is the sweet spot

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the first three weeks of a month are the quietest days in removals. Because our pricing is hourly rather than a day rate, that quietness turns into real money: less traffic on the way, no queue behind another job running late, and a crew that can start early because they are not finishing something else first.

If you have any flexibility at all on completion or tenancy dates, that midweek window is where to aim.

Time of day matters more than people expect

An 8am start beats an 11am start on the same day. Roads around Leeds are clearer, and if anything goes wrong, a lost key, a delayed completion, a lift that will not work, you have the whole day to absorb it instead of running into the evening.

School holidays cut both ways. Traffic is genuinely lighter, but summer is peak moving season so slots go quickly. If you are moving in July or August, book earlier than you think you need to.

Timing is not the biggest saving. Preparation is.

Here is the honest bit. Moving date choice might save you thirty to fifty pounds. Being properly ready saves considerably more, because on an hourly job every minute the crew spends waiting is a minute you pay for.

The costly delays are almost always the same handful: boxes still open when the van arrives, a bed not dismantled, nowhere to park because nobody warned the neighbours, and things being carried out that should have been dealt with weeks earlier. That last one is worth saying plainly, paying a removals crew to carry a broken wardrobe to a new house is the most expensive way to throw it away.

How to actually get the cheapest move

• Aim for a midweek day in the first three weeks of the month if your dates allow it.
• Ask for the earliest start of the day.
• Be fully packed the night before, including the kitchen.
• Dismantle beds and flat pack yourself, or book us to do it so it is priced in rather than improvised.
• Sort out parking at both ends and tell the neighbours.
• Get rid of what you are not keeping before moving day, not after.
• Get a written fixed quote so a slow day is not your problem.
