Where a car genuinely wins

• Three or more people sharing, where the per person figure in the table above drops below a typical walk up rail fare.
• Heavy luggage, boxes or equipment that you cannot carry across a station concourse and onto a second train.
• Origins or destinations a long way from a station, such as villages in the Dales or rural Northumberland.
• Journeys with children, older relatives or anyone who struggles with changes and platforms.
• Very early starts and late finishes when trains and coaches are not running.

If one of those fits, a fixed long distance fare is worth pricing. If none of them fit, book the train.

4. Is a break built into the time? On a trip over two hours there should be one. A firm that promises to do London in three hours flat has not planned for the Highway Code.
5. Who supplies the child seat? Agree it before the day. Do not assume the car will have one.
