Plasterboard has to be handled entirely on its own, and that catches a lot of people out on a renovation. Because of the gypsum in it, plasterboard cannot be mixed freely with general waste at landfill, and disposal sites strictly limit how much can travel in a mixed load. How plasterboard is priced
Plasterboard is charged by weight, starting from £45 for 50kg, with 100kg at £68 and 200kg at £136. If you have only a little mixed in with other waste, up to around 10% of a mixed load is fine at no extra charge. Above that we add a £35 contamination charge, or you can take dedicated plasterboard bags at £105, which is often the tidiest option on a busy site. Why it must be kept separate
Gypsum plasterboard releases hydrogen sulphide gas if it breaks down mixed in with biodegradable waste, which is precisely why the regulations require it to be segregated from general waste. Keeping your offcuts and old boards in their own pile, rather than buried through a general skip, is not just a rule for the sake of it. It keeps the job cheaper for you, keeps the load compliant, and means the board can actually be recycled instead of causing a problem.
Sent to gypsum recycling
Segregated plasterboard is sent to specialist gypsum recycling, where the plaster is recovered and the paper liner separated, and both are reused rather than landfilled. It keeps the material in circulation and out of the ground entirely, and recovered gypsum goes back into making new boards, which is about as close to a full circle as construction waste gets. This is exactly why sites are so strict about not letting plasterboard slip into a general mixed load, because once it is contaminated the whole load can be downgraded. Every collection comes with a digital waste transfer note under Environment Agency registration CBDU597687, and it supports our overall figure of more than 85% recycled or reused across every job we do.
